Exelon protects our shared natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices. We work to reduce our impacts on wildlife and enhance natural habitats. We conserve energy within our own operations. We also help customers use less energy and save money with tools that allow them to make smart choices.

Preserving habitats and biodiversity

All living things matter.

We have a variety of plants and animals in our shared environment, but habitat and biodiversity are more than that. All living things are vital to the ecosystems in which they live.

Aquatic ecosystems and migratory fish passages

For our facilities with dams in fish migration areas, we have evaluated and installed lifts or ladders, depending on the need, to allow migrating fish to travel upstream. During the 2018 migratory season, our Conowingo Generating Station passed 6,992 American shad via its east ﬁsh lift (EFL). Through 2018, this lift has passed a total of 1,240,181 American shad. We’re also proud to own and operate a major aquaculture facility, Quad Cities Fish Hatchery, in partnership with Southern Illinois University, to enhance stocks of several species.

Terrestrial habitats and wildlife

Our generating stations and rights-of-way traverse thousands of acres of land, which we carefully manage to protect habitats of plant and animal species. As we manage vegetation around transmission lines, we also work to benefit plants and wildlife that require open, low-growing habitats.

Exelon has a longstanding partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council to restore and enhance wildlife habitats at our facilities and where we have rights-of-way. Exelon has been a member of the council for more than 13 years and maintains 40 WHC sites and 52 National Wildlife Federation certified sites.

Prioritizing energy efficiency

Exelon helps customers conserve and be good environmental stewards too.

Exelon’s utilities help customers save energy and reduce their monthly bills through energy efficiency, real-time pricing and demand response programs. These tools allow customers to make smart energy choices to make their homes and businesses more efficient. Using less energy benefits the environment and reduces the need for new power plants.

In 2018, our utilities helped customers save approximately 21.9 million megawatt-hours of energy through home energy audits, lighting discounts, appliance recycling, home improvement rebates, equipment upgrade incentives, new construction design, and optimizing building operations and industrial processes.

Exelon has 21 LEED-certified environmentally friendly buildings and, with upcoming renovations and upgrades, more is on the way. (LEED is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings.)
