Three Mile Island Raises $17,000 for Special Olympics

Would you jump in 33-degree water in the middle of January? Three Mile Island produced 11 brave souls, who ventured to Gifford Pinchot State Park to submerge themselves in icy water for a good cause. TMI’s NAYGN Co-Chairs, Mara levy and Quinn VanderMeersch, organized site participation and accomplished a feat to beat all others in 2018 – raising more than $17,000.

TMI set fundraising records and earned the top award for the Central Pennsylvania Special Olympics. Participants of team
“TMI ICE-O-TOPES” included: Mara Levy, Quinn VanderMeersch, Victoria Molchany, Denita Zieger, Heath Wagner, John Piazza, Trevor Orth, Ed Hertkorn, Joe Valent, and Plant Manager Tom Haaf and his young son, Ben. This group used Exelon’s charitable donations matching program to maximize efforts.

Donning brightly colored swim suits and green hats, the plungers burst into water where just hours before was covered in ice five-inched thick. Each TMI employee splashed their way across skin-numbing water to high-five EMS workers and quickly jolted back to shore in search of warmth. TMI Engineering Director Joe Valent, dashed in with all his clothes on (safety boots and all). Haaf recorded the video on a waterproof phone and captured dramatic moments of when he dipped beneath the surface to reemerge in a state of shock and awfully cold. TMI presented a unified force of good for the community that still has some shivering.
