Teamwork, Training Credited for Saving a Worker’s Life

Nine FitzPatrick employees were honored with the American Red Cross Workplace Safety Award at the American Red Cross Real Heroes Breakfast in December for their efforts to save a contractor who collapsed at the plant. The award breakfast is held annually to honor Central New Yorkers who have performed heroic acts to help others in need. More than 1,000 people were in attendance.

Jeff Demong, Bill Ruby and Tom Stone accepted the award on behalf of the entire group whose emergency response training and dedication resulted in saving an individual’s life. The others honored were Tim Collins, Luke Osiecki, Kyle Platek, Mike Wallace, Dan Maniccia and Abe Yerdon.

On Aug. 30, a contract worker became ill during a meeting with a life-threatening condition, collapsed and had no vital signs. A FitzPatrick employee in the room rushed to his aid as another informed the Control Room of the emergency. As the station alarm sounded, the site’s first aid team and others with emergency response training responded to the area.

CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) were used to resuscitate the individual while others worked seamlessly behind the scenes to clear the area and direct an offsite ambulance to his location. The individual said that medical personnel he encountered following his transfer to the hospital credited the prompt actions and skilled training of the FitzPatrick employees for saving his life.

“On behalf of myself and my family, I would like to take this opportunity to properly thank you, literally from the bottom of my heart, for your valiant and dedicated efforts on my behalf the morning of August 30,” he said in a message to the FitzPatrick team shortly after his illness.

“Without exception, every medical professional I encountered because of this event was astounded at what the FitzPatrick medical emergency response organization accomplished in response to my heart attack,” he added. “You should all take a great deal of pride in your success. You seriously beat the odds on this one. Your dedication and commitment to your duties certainly score you HERO status in my book! Thank you one and all.”
