Quad Cities Employees Support Komen Greater Iowa

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the Quad Cities Station chapter of Women In Nuclear (WIN) presented Komen Greater Iowa with a donation of more than $4,800. Since 2010, the station's WIN chapter has supported breast cancer awareness with donations exceeding $12,000. Led by WIN, Quad Cities station also supports breast cancer awareness with a variety of different activities each October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The activities this past October included fundraising raffles, a beard contest for the guys and the sale of pink Exelon Generation hardhats and lanyards.

"Although Women in Nuclear seems to be a women's organization, men are encouraged to join," WIN member Melissa Baenziger said. "Similarly, breast cancer seems to be a woman's issue. But with statistics showing 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer, this affects men also. That means mothers, grandmothers, sisters and wives of men are affected; not to mention that men can get breast cancer as well. According to the American Cancer Society, about 480 men will die from breast cancer in 2018. With this in mind, we chose breast cancer awareness as a worthy cause to support because it's a cause every single station employee can benefit from."
