Military Veterans instrumental in safe operation of Byron Station

With more than 130 military veterans among our 800 permanent employees on site, it's safe to say that Byron Generating Station's successful operation benefits from the discipline and experiences from the U.S. military. Veterans are present in all departments, especially in Operations where many former Navy nuclear specialists help run the plant.

DiversityInc., the preeminent publication focused on corporate diversity, named Exelon as a "Top Company for Veterans."  Military Times agrees, naming Exelon one of the nation's "Best for Vets," a highly competitive honor given to companies that devote resources to recruiting veterans and their families and providing any support they may need for a successful transition from military to civilian life.

"These national honors let us know we've been paying attention to what brings the best people to Exelon and makes them want to stay," said Amy Best, Exelon's Chief Human Resources Officer. "Rankings like these also emphasize that a truly inclusive workplace gives us a competitive edge, because the more ideas we have from a variety of minds, the more innovative we can be. Thank you to all our employees whose contributions make Exelon better every day."

Four of Byron Station's employees were recently recognized by the Department of Defense with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve "Patriot Award." The award is given to supervisors for support provided directly to the nominating service member and his or her family. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed.

Maintenance employee Derrick Porter nominated four of his supervisors for their support while he was deployed. Joel Altenhoff, Pat Escatel, Sam Greenstreet and Steve Vogel were recently honored. Congratulations to all!

Memorial Day Cookout

Byron Station's EMAC Committee – Exelon Militaries Actively Connected – recently held a cookout to honor Memorial Day. Employees were treated to a free lunch, and many made cash donations that will go to a local veterans' charity. More than $1,500 was raised – and members of Byron EMAC will vote on the recipient charity at their next meeting.

Exelon, Byron Station, EMAC – a trio of top-notch performers with a positive military presence!
