Calvert Showcases Safe, Clean, Reliable Energy

With today's uncertain future of Nuclear Energy in the United States it is important that we take every opportunity to showcase not only the safe, clean, reliable energy that the plant contributes to the community, but our people and the contributions that we make to both our community and ensuring that the plant stays true to it's mission and values.

The Committee on Energy and Commerce is the oldest standing legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and is vested with the broadest jurisdiction of any congressional authorizing committee.

The committee was originally established on December 14, 1795, as the Committee on Commerce and Manufactures when the growing demands of the young nation required that Congress establish a permanent panel to exercise its constitutional authority to “regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States.”

Today, the committee has responsibility for matters including telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health and research, environmental quality, energy policy, and interstate and foreign commerce among others.

The roots of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources go back to one of the first standing committees appointed by the Senate -- the Committee on Public Lands. Although the chronology reflects a succession of name changes, the jurisdiction of the original Committee on Public Lands has been in continuous existence for over 170 years.

Currently, this committee maintains oversight of the Department of Energy.

A Cleaner Energy Future Starts with Nuclear<p>Beyond wind, solar, hydro, and other renewables, clean energy includes nuclear, too.
